By this point, most everyone knows of the greatness of coconut oil. If you can buy a gallon jug of it at Costco for $16, you probably know that it has value. You’ve probably used it in baking and perhaps you’ve seen it as an ingredient in lotions, but do you really know how incredibly versatile it is?
Coconut oil is high in healthy saturated fats including caprylic acid, lauric acid, and capric acid. These healthy fats help increase the good kind of cholesterol (called HDL) in your body, as well as decreasing the bad kind (called LDL). Not only that, but it can also convert the evil LDL into the good HDL. Healthy cholesterol helps to promote heart health and lowers the risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in America. HDL’s are also a lot easier for our bodies to break down and turn into energy, so coconut oil is a great source for immediate energy. Instead of resorting to something like a sugary candy bar or a spoonful of honey, a scoop of coconut oil on some toast, melted into your coffee, or mixed into a shake, is an excellent way to hit the ground running.
Additionally, this delicious oil helps to absorb vitamins and minerals like calcium and magnesium, as well as support healthy thyroid function and can boost hormone production. As if you weren’t convinced already about its magical properties, there have also been studies about how it can help to fight Alzheimer’s and cancer. That’s all just when it is consumed! It has, even more, benefits when used topically. It is a great moisturizer, can help get rid of cellulite, can be used to fight acne, and also helps repair damaged hair.
If you haven’t been taking advantage of all the benefits of coconut oil, or just need new ideas for incorporating it into your daily routine, here are some ideas for you.
Chocolate Coconut Clusters
Craving something sweet but don’t want to succumb to the sugar monster? Have no fear, coconut oil and dark chocolate are here. These tasty little clusters are like a mix of almond joy bars and coconut macaroons, sans that high fructose corn syrup and headache.
Make Your Own Lotion
Instead of wasting a couple of bucks at Walgreens on some smelly lotions pumped full of parabens, make your own ultra-moisturizing water-free lotion that will fit your skin type.
Most sunscreens are full of chemicals that can be harmful and can even have hormone altering effects. So why mess around with such potentially bad stuff when you can easily make your own sunscreen (and for much cheaper too)?
Make Your Own Toothpaste
Toothpaste also has some ingredients that get a pretty bad rap, i.e. glycerin and Sodium Fluoride. So, again, skip the risk and make your own toothpaste with 4 ingredients you probably already have at home.
Drink a Brain Power Smoothie
Since coconut oil is a great source of energy, it’s a wonderful base for a smoothie! This easy to make smoothie is also full of ingredients that will increase your brain power and make your skin glow.
Coconut Oil Coffee Creamer
If you can’t quite stomach black coffee but don’t want to use milk or artificial creamer, coconut oil makes an excellent coffee creamer. It cuts the bitter and acidity of the coffee and adds a smooth, creamy taste.
DIY Shampoo Bars
If you are a human with hair that needs to be cleaned, you probably have to use shampoo. Unfortunately, most shampoos are chock full of chemicals that strip our hair of the natural oils it needs to be healthy, which is why a homemade shampoo is a much better alternative, and again probably cheaper.
Fight Stubborn Acne
Not only is coconut oil moisturizing, but it’s also cleansing. It contains acids that combat bacteria that cause acne. Rub some on your face at night and wash off with a hot water cloth to clear stubborn zits and pimples.
