“I deliberately went quite weird,” Alexa Chung stated in response to the unveiling of her much-awaited fashion label, Alexachung. Chung, quirky and offbeat herself, has spent the past few years, if not the past decade, on many best-dressed lists. She’s had her own talk show, and with over two million followers on Instagram alone, it’s difficult to deny that Chung is our moment’s answer to the it-girl.
Given the hype surrounding Alexachung, there was, in the back of our minds, a possibility for a flop. However, it’s safe (and sure) to say that Alexachung, the single-named moniker for the British celebrity’s label, brought in 23 stellar looks for its first short-and-sweet show.
Keeping with the spirit of its creator and its ultimate mission, Alexachung produced a line that combined “Parisian chic with a New York edge, as well as the very British sense of humour.” Our favorite looks, for example, seem to embody this aesthetic most fully.
Pairing, for example, leather skirts and stripes, Alexachung accomplished what it set out to do. The looks possess that Parisian je ne sais quoi and New York cool – all without taking itself too seriously. In fact, Chung kicked off her first show with a graphic tee, one of her staples, that read ‘SCREW YOU’ in a groovy typeset, which is refreshing amid fashion’s tendency towards pomp and circumstance.
However, despite some memorable looks, Alexachung’s unveiling left us, at the end of it all, wanting a bit more. The show was quick, and if anything else, felt more like a sneak peak of something more to come, rather than an all-out unveiling. Of course, some slack is to be expected, given that it’s Chung’s first-time cultivating a collection. However, Alexachung’s first runway show, though rough, implied that its creator has the capability to pull off some major fashion moments in the future.
Already, Alexa Chung has proven that she’s a master of aesthetics – she knows her brand and how to execute it. So, in the meantime, we have faith in Alexachung’s future endeavors. Now is just the beginning.
