It was a ritual every Wednesday night over a glass of pinot grigio, you turned on your TV, sat back, and lived life through Carrie Bradshaw eyes. Comparing your best…
Last year FX premiered Better Things, a series executive produced by Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon, who also stars as a single mother, who is a working actor that barely makes enough to afford to raise her three daughters, without any help from her ex. In addition to taking care of three daughters, Adlon’s Sam still lives directly across the street from her own mother.
In anyone else’s hands this could easily just be another run-of-the-mill comedy about a single mom/actress, but with Adlon and C.K. you’re almost guaranteed a nuanced, layered, perfectly crafted portrait of single motherhood that’s entirely relatable, even if you live outside the Hollywood bubble.
Last week a short teaser clip was released to Vulture, in which Adlon’s Sam was back with all the character’s cynicism, joy, and wit perfectly in place. Today FX released an official season two trailer and it appears as if the series will continue to follow Sam and her daughters on their often frustrating, always emotionally satisfying journey. This season, Adlon didn’t just produce and write all ten episodes, but she’s directing them as well, which shouldn’t be a selling point because it should just be a given that there are women directing TV. Sadly, as we recently noted, there is such a significant lack of female directors working in television that one network had to create their own “Female Forward” initiative specifically to address the gender gap issue.
The Peabody Award-winning comedy returns Thursday, Sept. 14 at 10 pm only on FX.
Did you watch the first season? Are you excited for the show’s return? We’re dying to watch Sam attempt to handle her teenage daughter’s older boyfriend and curious where her own dating life leads in season two. What about you? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @UrthAve.
